BIOGRAPHY
Elisabeth Condon's paintings have been recognized by a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, and Florida Individual Artist Fellowship. They are in the permanent collections of Tampa Museum of Art, Perez Art Museum Miami, Hudson River Museum, United States Embassy Beijing, and numerous private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Extending her vision of synthetic landscape into the urban environment, Condon's public art works include Urban Idyll, commissioned by MTA Art & Design Percent for Art for the NYCT Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard Station in Queens and Lattice Views, commissioned by Norte Maar in Brooklyn's Highland Park.
For eleven years Condon served as Associate Professor at the University of South Florida, Tampa. She holds an MFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design, Los Angeles, where she grew up a second generation native. Condon currently lives and works in New York, NY and Tampa, FL.
STATEMENT
My paintings approach landscape as an artificial construction, simultaneously real and fake. They combine disparate paint applications, scavenging references from vintage wallpaper, glam rock nightclubs, and the scrubby canyon at the end of the street where I grew up in Los Angeles.
I used to imagine the Asian-inspired décor in my childhood home as a backdrop for the canyon’s riverbeds and rocks. Décor and nature together dissolves distinctions between inside and out, figure and ground, even linear time. Horizon lines and single point perspective vanish in the boundless field of wallpaper repeats.
In a lavishly decorated, conservative household, décor doubled as God, its patterns surreptitiously surveilling me. The wallpaper felt confining, while freeing its patterns in flows of color complicates the unfolding of time.
A dialectic of accident and control governs my painting process. An improvisational ethos fueled by postwar abstraction relishes liquid pours, to which pumice, glitter, calligraphy ink, and iridescent glazes generate tiger-like striations or blooms intercepted by texture and spatial reversals. Poured paint makes chaotic what pattern organizes. Lattice forms atmospheric webs that contain amorphous pours. It’s my form of calligraphy, directing the brush with confidence.
